We have started a unit on Living and Nonliving things. Kids are having conversations debating if something is living or nonliving. We started with a slideshow containing a bunch of pictures-of both living and non-living things.
We looked at the pictures and I asked the kids to decide if each object was living or non-living. I did not correct them right away, allowing time for them to discuss their thoughts and answers. They could pretty easily tell you which ones are living and which are not, but there are a few tricky ones (a rock and tree bark).
It's fun to listen to the reasoning behind their answers--the debate became quite heated at times!

After the slide show, we had a discussion with the following questions:
How can you tell if something is living or non-living?
What are some things that all living things have in common?
We decided to come up with a list to help us decide if something is living or not. We then eliminated some of the listed criteria.
