Popsicle Drop
Popsicle Drop is one of our new favorite math games. As you can imagine, Kindergartners are all over the board when it comes to early numeracy. We try to meet the needs of all students by individualizing their instruction. We also try to keep math playful and fun. Our new game Popsicle Drop does both of these.
Kids get a handful of popsicle sticks which are held together with a rubber band. The popsicle sticks have a varying amount of black dots on them. (ones, fives or tens)
Kids say, "Popsicle Drop" and gently let them go at their math space. When the popsicle sticks land, they count up the dots and record the number.
When needed, we use a number line to help us recall and write the numeral.
* Some kids are building and counting numbers less than five. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
* Some kids are building numbers less than ten and practicing counting on from five. (5, 6, 7, 8)
*Some kids are making teen numbers and counting on from ten. (10, 11, 12, 13)
*Some kids are building numbers up to one hundred and counting by tens and then adding the ones.
(10, 20, 30, 31, 32, 33)
* Some kids are building numbers greater than one hundred and counting off decade. (3, 13, 23, 33, 43, 53, 63, 73)

Listening Center
Listening to stories is fun even if the technology is from 1980! Kids really enjoyed listening to classic stories using cassette tapes! One friend excited exclaimed, "These must be really expensive!"
First flakes of Snow!
Nothing like watching the first snow fall from our classroom window! Kindergartners were excited to see the flakes drifting to the ground. Too bad they didn't last until recess!
